Q: What Will Travel Look Like in 2021?

A: Americans are gradually beginning to travel again, but stay tuned!

Earlier this month, we continued to ask respondents about their travel plans for 2021. Compared to our initial survey data on this topic from April 9 - 13, 2020, we observed an increase in the number of respondents who did not have travel plans but intend to travel in 2021. Similarly, our results show a significant decrease among travelers who intend to cancel their plans. We find that 39% plan to cancel their travel, down from 55% in mid-November, and 12% “did not have travel plans, but intend on traveling,” up 6% from mid-November.

However, in this poll after the holiday season, there has been a slight uptick in the number of respondents who plan to cancel or postpone their travel -- up 5% from the December 28 survey (from 34% to 39%). This is significantly lower than the mid-November level of 55%, but we will continue to closely monitor this leading indicator of economic health.
